Keeping tools organized is crucial for any construction professional, whether you're running a business out of your home garage or working on personal projects. In our experience as contractors and homeowners, a well-organized workspace saves time, increases productivity, and even helps extend the lifespan of your tools (and prevents losing them).
The truth is, there are infinite approaches to organizing your tools and workbench. From classic pegboards to more innovative and modern smart storage solutions, this guide will cover everything you need to know to get your tools in order.
The Best Places to Store Tools in Your Workshop
Workbenches
In my opinion, workbenches are the heart of any workshop, providing a place to store tools within easy reach. They can be customized conveniently with drawers, shelves, or even built-in power strips. I believe that you can never have too much space on your workbench. Countertops can quickly become congested with tools, hardware, and projects, and there's nothing worse than having to push everything to the side to work on an important project. It's always better to have more space than you need and be able to spread out projects, parts, and tools to get a better view of what you are working on.
Pro Tip: Look for workbenches with adjustable shelving or modular parts so you can tailor them to your needs as they change.
Popular Product Option: The Gladiator Modular Workbench offers sturdy workbenches with modular options for flexible organization. I love modular systems, which allow flexibility and customization to individual needs and priorities.
Wall Space
Vertical storage uses otherwise wasted wall space, allowing you to keep tools off surfaces but within reach. I've personally always been amazed at how much extra real estate I gain by efficiently using wall space. Depending on your needs, pegboards, slot walls, and shelving units are all excellent choices. I would recommend taking time to consider what types of tools and hardware you and what styles will work best for you.
Pro Tip: Designate specific wall areas for different types of tools. For example, keep smaller hand tools on a pegboard and power tools on a sturdy shelf. Smaller tools that are used more often, such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and Allen keys are great examples of small tools you will want to keep within easy reach.
Tool Cabinets and Chests
Tool cabinets provide plenty of storage for hand tools, power tools, and hardware. They’re durable and often come with locks, which are ideal for securing valuable items or keeping potentially dangerous tools away from children. There are many ways to organize a tool chest, but personally, I like to keep it simple. I categorize each drawer with similar types of tools, lay everything out flat in the drawer so it's easy to see, and use a label maker to label the outside of the drawer.
Popular Option: I personally have had great experience with Husky Tool Chests from Home Depot. They are well-known for their quality and versatility. Many of the models include soft-close drawers, which protect delicate tools, as well as latches that keep the drawers closed if you need to roll the chest around. I find them to be great value for the price.
Innovative Tool Organization Products
Magnetic Tool Holders
Magnetic tool holders are strong magnetic strips that hold metal tools. They’re easy to install on walls and perfect for frequently used tools like wrenches or screwdrivers. If you frequently reach for small tools, I like these as an alternative to pegboard because you don't need to worry about accidentally pulling the hook out of the board.
Why It Works: Keeps tools visible, accessible, and easy to grab.
Where to Find It: Check out the Master Magnetics Magnetic Tool Holder from Ace Hardware, which has various lengths to fit your desired application.
Stackable Storage Bins
Stackable bins are perfect for organizing small items like nails, screws, nuts, and bolts.
Why It Works: These bins save space by stacking, and they can be labeled for quick access.
Where to Find It: You can find these stackable storage bins at almost any hardware retailer, but I personally like the Husky Stackable Click Bins
Battery Charger Organizers
In recent years, I have slowly been upgrading my corded power tools to, what are in my opinion, highly superior battery variations. This is why I believe having dedicated stations to charge and store power tool batteries is incredibly valuable. Having a dedicated area to store, organize, and charge your batteries helps with organization and, in my experience, increases the likelihood that you will return a battery to charge after you are done using it. Most modern lithium battery charging systems are smart, so you don't need to worry about overcharging the battery.
Virtually all popular brands have multi-battery charging stations. Here is an example of a Dewalt model sold at Home Depot.
Classic Organization Methods for Timeless Efficiency
Pegboards
Pegboards have been around for a long time, they are wall-mounted panels with holes, allowing you to hang tools using metal pegs. Pegboards make it easy to see all your tools simultaneously, helping with quick identification and accessibility. You can buy a variety of hangers and even small shelves for pegboard, making it a versatile solution. Personally, I have converted all of my pegboards to a steel variety that I bought from Princess Auto, which increases its strength drastically.
Pro Tip: Outline each tool’s spot on the pegboard with a marker so it’s clear where each tool belongs. This takes some time and planning, but is well worth it in the long run. Be sure to leave some space for new tools in the future!
Wooden Tool Racks
Classic wooden racks are ideal for storing longer or heavier tools that cannot fit on pegboard. I use shelving to store and organize all of my tools that have dedicated cases, as well as large boxes of hardware, toolboxes, screws, and nails.
Why It Works: A durable wooden tool rack can be customized to hold specific tool sizes. If you're handy, you can make a custom rack from scrap wood for a cost-effective solution. I built mine from some L Brackets I found in the basement and some rough-cut lumber. This gave me the rustic look I was looking for in my garage.
Tool Totes and Tool Bags
Portable bags or totes with compartments for hand tools and small parts. Drill sets often come with these, and they are great for having a kit that is ready to go when you need it and easy to transport.
Classic Option: If you're looking for something contractor-grade, the Klein Tools Tradesman Pro is a favorite among professionals for its rugged build and multiple compartments.
Storage Solutions for Power Tools and Hardware
Power Tool Mounts
Wall-mounted brackets are designed to hold heavy power tools like drills, saws, and grinders. You can even buy brackets that match the design of your battery, making it a nice clean "slide" in and out. I 3D printed my own battery brackets, but you can buy them too! Amazon is a great place to start to find brackets that match your brand of tool.
Heavy-Duty Shelving Units
If you need to store heavy equipment or large heavy totes, strong metal or wood shelving units are a must. These units can support the weight of power tools and other heavy items, keeping them off the floor and within reach. The options here are virtually limitless, and almost all retailers will have options. Still, the Gladiator Shelving Units from Gladiator Garage Works is a particularly good option with excellent durability and versatility.
Tool and Hardware Drawers
Small drawers, containers or cabinets are perfect for organizing screws, nails, and other small hardware. With clear labels, these drawers make finding the necessary hardware easy without rummaging.
Popular Option: The Stanley Small Parts Organizer is a compact and affordable solution.
Advanced Wall Storage Options
Modular Slot Wall Panels
A modern alternative to pegboards with horizontal slots for mounting tool holders. Slot walls allow for more flexible storage with specialized hooks and mounts for different tools. In my opinion, it also creates a more uniform and luxurious look for your garage. The downside to these systems is they can be a bit more expensive. Still, I recommend exploring them as an option for your garage.
Where to Find It: Proslat Wall Storage has a high-quality system that’s easy to install and customize. These modular wall panels allow you to create the custom garage of your dreams. Panels that can be rearranged with hooks, baskets, and bins for customizable storage. Modular walls allow you to change your layout as your tool collection grows or changes.

An organized workspace is the foundation of an efficient workflow. Whether you’re a pro or a hobbyist, implementing these tool organization strategies will help you maximize your time and resources. Whether you go with classic solutions like pegboards or invest in modern products like modular wall panels, I hope you find the system that best fits your style and needs.
